Project summary:
A grant was awarded to Crawley Borough Council to purchase 7.1 hectares (ha) of Tilgate Forest currently in the ownership of the National Grid Company. In securing purchase of the land and designating a local nature reserve (LNR) Crawley Borough Council will be protecting this area of diverse conservation interest for future generations. The Council is aiming to integrate the site into the existing Tilgate Park facility. Local residents have formed an association and approached the Council with a view to actively contributing to the maintenance and management of this particular area of land.


Site description:
Tilgate proposed LNR is largley wooded however the site also contains patches of heath and scrub. The site is also of historical interest with mine-pits associated with the medieval iron industry.
