Coastal defence

A wide variety of techniques designed to prevent erosion and flooding are used. The following are usually referred to as 'hard' defences include:

A number of 'softer' options are also used including:

Guidance: In considering these approaches a review of their effectiveness is needed. A number of 'truths' derived from studies and practical experience in the USA suggest that in many instances coastal defence structure may be costly and ineffective. Some of these 'truths' may be tested at Spey Bay where a variety of approaches to sea defence are being considered. Saline lagoons are particularly susceptible and can be inadvertently damaged by works designed to 'improve' the coastal defence capability of a beach as happened at Cley-Salthouse on the North Norfolk coast.
