Guide to understanding and management of saltmarshes

This guide was commissioned by the Environment Agency, prepared by Halcrow Consulting Engineers with input from specialists working on saltmarshes in the UK. The report contains the following sections:

  • Management guidelines by A.R. Toft;
  • Estuarine processes by J.S. Pethick;
  • Saltmarsh ecology by A.J. Gray;
  • Nature conservation and amenity by J.P. Doody;
  • Maintenance and enhancement of saltmarshes by F. Burd;
  • Economics by E Penning-Rowsell.

The guide represents the most comprehensive and wide-ranging description of the management and restoration of saltmarshes in the UK (Toft & Madrell 1995). The report (cost £60) and a summary of the report (£10) are available.

Further guidance: Details of this publication can be found on the Environment Agency, R&D Dissemination Centre web site, which is hosted by the WRc Group @ http://www.eareports.com/ea/rdreport.nsf/. Using the search facility brings up a number of other reports and projects specifically relating to saltmarsh management and restoration, amongst other information relating to coastal habitats.
