Bitterns LIFE Nature 1 (LIFE96 NAT/UK/003057)

Urgent action for the Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) in the UK was considered necessary due to its decline during the 1900s as habitat loss and deterioration took place. This led to a proposal for a LIFE Nature project which set out to reinstate reedbeds and reverse the trend of abandonment of traditional reed management. The RSPB (the lead agency) sought to improve habitat quality at 13 sites, mostly in East Anglia - the species' current stronghold - and at one outlying site in northwest England. This was done in partnership with wetland management agencies in both the public and private sectors.

Beneficiary : Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (http://www.rspb.co.uk); Duration : 01-JUL-1996 -> 01-APR-2000
