Saline lagoons, methods of creation or re-creation - summary

Before attempting to create or re-create a saline lagoon several factors need to be considered. The first of these concerns the reasons for creation (or re-creation) of a lagoon. Section 4 of the Saline Lagoon Guide describes the creation of lagoons and includes advice on site related information needed to help develop any proposal. These include:

  • Geology and geomorphology - is there an optimum location where a lagoon basin can be established?
  • Water sources - are there suitable and available sources of saline and freshwater?
  • Water exchange - are there, or can there be, suitable control features for saline water exchange?
  • Are there known threats which might preclude the successful long-term establishment of a new lagoon?

Assuming the answers are acceptable then the methods which can be employed include some of the following:

General guidance: At the local level, creation of a lagoon may be subject to planning regulations and planning permission, as a change of land use, or as a development carrying inherent implications for immediate or adjacent landusers/landowners.
