Saltmarsh methods - protecting the eroding edge
At a
few sites in the UK where saltmarsh is eroding at its seaward edge as a result
of wave (or tidal movement) the placement of ad hoc protection has been attempted.
In the case of the Severn Estuary (see picture opposite), it seems there is
a natural cycle of erosion
and accretion. Here the rip-rap
structures may not have been needed at all!

Guidance: It is important when considering the protection of the
eroding edge of a saltmarsh to ensure this is not just part of the natural
cycle of erosion and accretion, as appears to be the case in the above
photograph. It would also seem inappropriate to place alien material into
such a situation not only from a nature conservation perspective, but
also from a landscape perspective.
