Saltmarsh restoration - summary
Restoration methods which are designed to help re-create saltmarshes to seaward
or to protect the existing saltmarsh edge fall into four main categories. These
are depicted in the figure, below. These are dealt with in separate sections
of the guide as follows:
- Waves breaks (including Breakwaters);
- Sediment
recharge;
- Polders;
- Vegetation
planting including introducing plant material (seeds, plants and
turf).

These approaches may be accompanied by attempts to protect the edge of an eroding
marsh using 'Rip
Rap'..

Guidance: Protecting or restoring saltmarshes by preventing erosion
and/or promoting accretion seawards is becoming a less favoured option
especially in area where relative sea
level is rising. Here in may more appropriate to adopt a strategy
which accepts a landward movement of the tidal land, including saltmarsh.
This is included under the more generic managed
realignment section. Examples are also available from the USA
including San
Francisco Bay.
