Sand and mud flats - States and Values

Tidal sand and/or mudflats exist to two basic states:

  1. They are either accreting (State 1);
  2. Or eroding (State 2).

They are highly dynamic and their value, particularly for wintering waterfowl may be influenced to a large extent by the speed at which change takes place. Sediment size is also important.
