Sea cliffs restoration methods - summary
There are two very different approaches to restoring (principally the nature
conservation interest) on sea cliffs. For hard rock cliffs it requires
the control of the coarse vegetation by mechanical means or through mowing
and burning.
The reintroduction of grazing either as a means of restoration on its own, or
more frequently following removal of scrub by other means, is essential.
| Guidance: Simply removing scrub and/or reintroducing
stock to formerly grazed cliff top grassland may be enough for the restoration
of interest and indicative
grazing regimes for sheep have been identified for different
vegetation types. These regimes may need to be modified to take account
of more specific management
requirements relating to the location
and type cliff vegetation or other special animal interest.
On soft rock cliffs the reactivation
of protected cliffs is the principle means of restoration of over stable
cliffs.
