Definition of reedbeds
Reed (Phragmites australis) is a perennial
with world-wide distribution, adapted to growing in wetland conditions. It is
tolerant of widely variable water depths and quality, including seasonal water
table fluctuations of at least one metre.
Definition Biodiversity Action Plan - "Reedbeds are wetlands dominated
by stands of the common reed Phragmites australis,
wherein the water table is at or above ground level for most of the year. They
tend to incorporate areas of open water and ditches, and small areas of wet
grassland and carr woodland may be associated with them. Reed beds are amongst
the more important habitats for a number of highly specialised and rare birds
in the UK."
