Reedbed water management - summary

Water management including manipulation of water levels and periodicy of seasonal flooding are key features of reedbed management, whether for nature conservation or economic reasons. It also is an essential element in restoration programmes, especially when providing conditions suitable for rare birds such as the bittern and in ensuring newly created habitat is sustainable in the longer term.

General guidance: The successful manipulation of water levels depends on a sometimes intricate system of artificial structures including bunds, ditches and pumps to move the water around. These features should be incorporated at the time of creating new topography suitable for reedbed growth.
