Maintaining ungrazed or slightly grazed (State 3) saltmarshes
Traditionally ungrazed or lightly grazed saltmarshes (State
3) should continue to be managed in accordance with the existing
regime. There will normally be no need for anything other than minor changes
to the grazing pattern required by normal stock management practices.
|
Guidance: Do not introduce grazing on marshes ungrazed by domestic
stock, though see "abandoned (formerly grazed)" marshes (State
4). Chapter 5 (Doody 2001).
It is possible that elimination of grazing could be appropriate where
a formerly ungrazed (by domestic stock) saltmarsh has recently been subject
to the new grazing pressures. This has the potential, at least, to remove
those elements from the sward that are sensitive to grazing animals including
plants species, invertebrates and breeding birds. There are no know examples
of this situation.
