Values - State 1, Eroding shingle beaches
The value which might be attached to an eroding shingle beach or structure
depend on the extent of the loss of material. Generally this state is viewed
in a negative way as its value for sea defence is diminished and because of
the loss of habitat which usually occurs. However there are some positive values
and these are summarised below:
- Nature conservation
- Potentially provides material for new shingle ridges and with them opportunities
for the natural restoration of vegetation, i.e. a means of moving from State
2 to State 1
- Coastal defence and economic
- Eroding shingle has the potential to build up along the shore and create
new protective features elsewhere;
- Is used as a source
of gravel (often with adverse consequences);
- Slopes for mooring boats.
Comment: In assessing the value of this state it is important to
differentiate between those sites where erosion is progressive due to the absence
of new material to replenish the system and those where it is part of the natural
dynamic. The former is the norm but the latter can occur and should not be overlooked.
