Natura 2000 codes and equivalent National Vegetation Classification (NVC) categories

There are two categories covering vegetated shingle included in the EU Manual.

Codes Directive Name NVC communities, relevant pages (Rodwell 2000), applicable to the UK only
1210 Annual vegetation of drift lines Including SD 2 Honkenya peloides-Cakile maritima strandline community (Pages 136-139) and SD 3 Matricaria maritima-Galium aparine strandline community (Pages 140-143). Both communities of sandy/shingle shorelines.

Perennial vegetation of stony banks

17.32 Channel sea kale communities

17.33 Atlantic sea kale communities

SD 1 Rumex crispus-Glaucium flavum shingle community (Pages 128-135)

Table: Coastal habitats of Community interest (shingle) forming the basis for the selection of Special Areas for Conservation (SACs). From the Interpretation Manual of European Union Habitats, European Commission, October 1999.

Comment: These represent a very limited view of the vegetation that can be found on stable shingle. NVC communities, classified under other habitats such as Maritime Cliff (MC), may be present. MC 6 Atriplex prostrata-Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima sea-bird cliff community can be found on beaches, which are enriched by organic matter deposited on the strandline. Single stands of some species may not be classified at all. On the more mature and stable areas communities can range from grassland, to heath scrub and in a few cases woodland (Sneddon & Randall 1993a Main Report).
