Controlling sea buckthorn Hippophae

Due to its invasive qualities attempts to control the species on a number of sand dune sites with a high nature conservation values have been undertaken. The general methods employed included:

  • Cutting of the scrub by hand (time consuming and costly)
  • using a variety of types of machinery;
  • Treatment of the stumps with herbicides;
  • Burning;
  • Removal of litter.

General guidance: For specific information on the techniques applied, see particularly experience from the Sefton Coast. A recent review of the status of the species within the Lincolnshire coast candidate Special Area of Conservation commissioned by English Nature has proposed a management scheme which involves partial control of the species.
