Projects funded by the European Union

There are several funding opportunities with LIFE being the most frequently used for habitat management and restoration schemes (see LIFE home page @ http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life/home.htm.). Specific LIFE and other EU funded restoration programmes are as follows:

Life Nature

The LIFE - Nature programme contributes grant aid and promotes projects within the European Community on sites of Community interest under the EU Habitats (92/43/EEC) and Birds (79/409/EEC) Directives. It involves actions aimed at conservation of natural habitats and the wild fauna and flora of European Union interest supporting the implementation of nature conservation policy in member states and 'third countries'. Relevant restoration projects are:

  • Restoration of Danish dune habitats along the west coast (LIFE02 NAT/DK/008584);
  • Yzer "Integrated Coastal Conservation Initiative" (LIFE96 NAT/B/003032);
  • Salt meadows in the Flemmish polders (LIFE99 NAT/B/006295);
  • Bitterns 1 - Developing a strategic network of SPA reedbeds for Botaurus stellaris (LIFE02 NAT/UK/008527);
  • Bitterns 2 - Urgent action for the Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) in the UK (LIFE96 NAT/UK/003057);
  • Bitterns 3 - Programme for the restoration and management of the habitats used by the Bittern in France (LIFE00 NAT/F/007269);
  • Conservation of the Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) in the Endorreic Wetlands of the Ebro valley in Navarra (LIFE97 NAT/E/004179);
  • Conserving saline lagoons & their birds on ten Natura 2000 sites in England (LIFE99 NAT/UK/006086);
  • Living with the sea: Managing Natura 2000 sites on dynamic coastlines (LIFE99 NAT/UK/006081);
  • Orfordness: The conservation of Orfordness (LIFE94 NAT/UK/000850) & Wild Ness: the conservation of Orford Ness, Phase 2 (LIFE97 NAT/UK/004245);
  • Marine SACs: To develop and promote the necessary conservation measures for UK marine SACS (LIFE96 NAT/UK/003055);

Life Environment

Interreg

  • BERM - Beach Erosion in the Rives Manche. [An Interreg II programme funded by the European Union (Priority E: Environmental Conservation and Enhancement. Measure 9: Information, Prevention and Awareness)].
  • Two Bays - shingle management in south England and northern France.
