LIFE Nature - Conserving Saline Lagoons and their birds in England (LIFE99 NAT/UK/006086)

Conserving saline lagoons & their birds on ten Natura 2000 sites in England will make a contribution to the the saline lagoons action plan that is part of the UK's Biodiversity Action Plan. Bank protection works, control of silt deposition and water levels, reprofiling/maintaining nesting islands, control of encroaching vegetation and predator populations and restriction of human access will all form a part of the management activities. Monitoring to assess the short and long-term effectiveness of measures taken will be implemented at all sites. The work in also concerned with creating habitat for bitterns (see a new web site http://www.bitterns.org/, which provides information on the progress of the work). This will be followed by the publication of best practice guidelines.

Due for completion in April 2003, these guidelines will supplement those prepared on behalf of the Saline Lagoon Working Group and published in a Saline Lagoon Guide by English Nature (Bamber et al. 2001).
