A Conservation Strategy for the Sand Dunes of the Sefton Coast, North West England (LIFE95 NAT/UK/000818)

The project has supported purchase of key sections of the coastal dunes and heath; establishment of nature reserves over the most sensitive locations and development of educational and information nature trails at appropriate sites; development of nature conservation management plans in cooperation with golf course managers and other land owners; habitat restoration and species recovery actions; and finally workshops to share the experiences of this programme with managers of similar dune SACs across Europe. Information via the Life web site http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life/project/index.htm

The LIFE project included publication of three reports on the development of good practice in dune conservation management across the Sefton Coast (Sefton Council, English Nature and the National Trust) with the support of the EU Life Nature fund:

  1. Multiple-use management of the Ainsdale Dunes on the Sefton Coast (http://www.seftoncoast.org.uk/bestpra1.html);
  2. The restoration of open dune communities at Ainsdale Sand Dunes National Nature Reserve (http://www.seftoncoast.org.uk/bestpra2.html);
  3. The integration of management for golf and nature on the sefton coast (http://www.seftoncoast.org.uk/bestpra3.html).

Copies can be accessed via the Sefton Coast web site @ http://www.seftoncoast.org.uk/ via the wildlife section 'best practice guidelines'

Duration : 1st September 1995 - 1st May 1999
