Cape-Ferret - dune stabilisation

This is one of a number of sites where major planting schemes have been undertaken in historical times. In this case an artificial dune was created in front of a dune extensively planted with maritime pines in the nineteenth century (Paskoff 2001). The method adopted included a double line of fences parallel to the shore just above the foreshore and on a reprofiled foredune. Extensive planting of marram and sand couch culms was undertaken to landward of the fences. The plateau of the dune was covered in brushwood.

Les "Ensablés" au Cap Ferret (Gironde): Has since been included in a restoration on 2 km of totally degraded coastal dune threatening to engulf the urban fringe. This is one of four case studies included in a LIFE Environment project on the Atlantic coast of France.
