Saltfleetby scheme for Hippophae management

The scheme of management involves some zoning of the site to allow the establishment and management of a dynamic equilibrium where colonising sea buckthorn (Hippophae scrub), as well as more permanent mature stands of the species, can be allowed to become established. The aim is to ensure that rapid invasion of the species, is not at the expense of the grey dune, yellow dune or humid dune slack features of interest.

Guidance: The plan provides some general guidance, namely:

  • in order to balance Hippophae scrub interest with those of other habitats, the present overall area of sea buckthorn scrub may need to be controlled in some of these other habitats;
  • in areas of other major dune habitats a policy of strict control and selective removal of new sea buckthorn seedlings is recommended;
  • sea buckthorn on the coastal dune edge should be mowed or flailed on a five year rotation;
  • at Gibraltar Point removal of sea buckthorn scrub over a large area of should be undertaken as a means of increasing the dune slacks and grey dunes habitat;
  • some small areas of semi mature and mature, diverse Hippophae scrub should be left no management, allowing them to undergo long term natural successions.
