Infrastructure development - Southampton Water

One of the main causes of loss on estuarine coasts is the development of ports and harbours. In Southampton Water large areas of tidal land have been lost and proposals to expand the port continue to threaten coastal habitats. An Inquiry into the proposal for development of a deep-water container terminal, at Dibden Bay closed on 12 December 2002. Details are available from the Planning Inspectorate (which works within the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) @

Caption: The development of major container port facilities, as here at Southampton Water, cause major conflict between nature conservation interests and industry as tidal land is proposed for the development of additional larger scale facilities.
