General principles to consider when undertaking wetland restoration

The recently published guide to wetland restoration (Bardsley et al. 2001) provides a useful summary of the steps that need to be taken when deciding on habitat restoration in a specific location. The "Steps to consider" are:

Guidance: This guide sets out to provide information on restoring individual habitats. However, wetlands (especially estuaries and other tidal wetlands) are complex systems. Restoring one habitat, for example saltmarsh, when undertaking managed realignment may be at the expense of other areas of value. It will be extremely important to consider these 'knock-on' effects, including the value of transitional habitats before proceeding with a particular scheme.

Comment: In the USA there are many generic publications for example the US Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds (http://www.epa.gov/owow/estuaries/) which also sets out some guiding principles to habitat restoration.
