The State Evaluation Models

Each habitat section of the Guide includes a state evaluation model or models. The use of state evaluation models is a novel aspect to the Guide. It involves the provision of guidance on how to arrive at 'judgments' on the relative merits of moving the habitat from its existing state to a restored state. By assessing the 'value' of the current state of a habitat, and the 'value' of the restored habitat, it is possible to arrive at a 'cost' (loss of interest or value) or 'benefit' (gain of interest or value) when taking a particular restoration path.

Caption: The pictures show the three identified states for saltmarsh associated with the overall stability of the marsh. Another series of states has been identified for restoring saltmarsh vegetation.

Comment: Each state has been assigned a series of values which will help determine the appropriate 'route to restoration'. Links to the State and Value models for each habitat are provided.
