The State Evaluation Models
Each habitat
section of the Guide includes a state evaluation model or models.
The use of state evaluation models is a novel aspect to the Guide. It involves
the provision of guidance on how to arrive at 'judgments' on the relative merits
of moving the habitat from its existing state to a restored state. By assessing
the 'value'
of the current state of a habitat, and the 'value' of the restored habitat,
it is possible to arrive at a 'cost' (loss of interest or value) or 'benefit'
(gain of interest or value) when taking a particular restoration path.

The pictures show the three identified states for saltmarsh associated with
the overall stability of the marsh. Another series of states has been identified
for restoring saltmarsh vegetation.
Comment: Each state has been assigned a series of values
which will help determine the appropriate 'route to restoration'. Links
to the State
and Value models for each habitat are provided.
