National Estuary Programme in the USA
The National Estuary Program was established in 1987 by amendments to the Clean
Water Act to identify, restore, and protect nationally significant estuaries
of the United States. There are 28
NEP sites is administered and funded by the US Environmental Protection
Agency [http://www.epa.gov]. Around
the country, local stakeholders work together to identify and prioritise the
problems in their estuaries. NEP community stakeholders include citizens, educators,
government representatives, environmental advocates, business leaders, scientists,
farmers, and people who fish. Each NEP community develops a Comprehensive Conservation
and Management Plan (CCMP) with specific actions designed to protect the estuary
and its resources. The objective is to create and implement a plan that addresses
the whole range of environmental problems facing the estuary.
Introduction to the policy for the 28 sites included in the programme across
USA can be obtained from: http://www.epa.gov/owow/estuaries/about2.htm
which provides links to the home web pages for each of the programme sites.
Short summaries and links to a few sites where restoration work has been undertaken
and the results accessible via the Internet. These are grouped into the main
geographical areas:

Guidance: The examples chosen within each area illustrate some
of the different problems and approaches to dealing with coastal habitat
restoration. More general information can be found on the NEP
Habitat Restoration web site.
