Suffolk Coast and Estuaries CHaMP index

The Suffolk coast lies on the exposed east coast of East Anglia. The area includes several lagoons including the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds reserve at Minsmere (cSAC and SPA). The extensive Orfordness candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) includes one of the largest and most important shingle structures in the UK. Further south the estuaries of the Deben, Orwell and Stour are SPA (see figure opposite taken from the 'Living with the Seas' web site http://www.english-nature.org.uk/). The sites on the Suffolk coast include valuable examples of restoration as follows:

  • Orfordness - provides a range of example of habitat restoration and management;
  • Minsmere - reedbed management, including manipulation of salinity regimes;
  • The Orwell Estuary - use of harbour dredging to help restore sand and mudflats;
  • Havergate Island - managed realignment.

Caption: The location of examples of habitat restoration are shown on the figure.

Note: A copy of the Executive Summary for this CHaMP is included on the CD-ROM.
