Construction Industry Research and Information Association
( CIRIA)
The Construction Industry Research and Information Association are involved
in a number of studies, which are designed to provide guidance on management.
A primary source of general information can be found in:
- An "Environmental Good Practice on Site". This is a very general
guide aimed at site managers, site engineers and supervisors (Coventry
& Woolveridge 2000) available from CIRIA.
A further Research Project has been completed to inform front-line construction
staff working on coastal
and marine projects about the environmental impacts associated with
a range of common construction operations and to provide guidance on avoiding
or mitigating those impacts. The work was be funded by (DEFRA / EA and others)
and provides guidance relating to coastal and marine construction activities.
It is presented in a format suitable for use on site and easy to use in an emergency
situation. This project addresses this need by producing an easy-to-understand
site guide with practical and accessible information on appreciating, avoiding
and mitigating the effects of poor environmental practice while working on coastal
and marine construction projects.
For information on the status of this guide which was completed in 2002 see
the CIRIA Web Site: 2 Storey's Gate, Westminster, London, SW1P 3AU.
Realigning Coastal Defences
CIRIAs has been commissioned (2003) to produce new project Design, for
managed realignment. The study
aims to provide a comprehensive technical good practice guide aimed at coastal
engineers that will encourage more sustainable coastal defence construction.
This will provide generic guidance on designing managed realignment schemes
in the UK and will highlight all the related technical and practical issues
that should be considered during the design of such schemes.
See CIRIA web site http://www.ciria.org.uk/
