Heathland restoration manual

The Guide was produced in order to provide a wide-ranging appraisal of the techniques for restoring ad re-creating heathland. The motivation was re-instating heath following the laying of gas pipelines in the 1980s (hence the sponsorship from British Gas). The guide has the following chapters:

  1. An introduction which describes heathland its origins, type, change in species composition, soils and seed germination;
  2. A description of types of disturbance and loss together with information on reinstatement attempts;
  3. Methods available for restoration such as turfing, use of topsoil, heather litter, transplants etc.;
  4. Aftercare and management;
  5. Appendices including case histories
