Heathland restoration manual
The Guide was produced in order to provide a wide-ranging appraisal of the
techniques for restoring ad re-creating heathland. The motivation was re-instating
heath following the laying of gas pipelines in the 1980s (hence the sponsorship
from British Gas). The guide has the following chapters:
- An introduction which describes heathland its origins, type, change in species
composition, soils and seed germination;
- A description of types of disturbance and loss together with information
on reinstatement attempts;
- Methods available for restoration such as turfing, use of topsoil, heather
litter, transplants etc.;
- Aftercare and management;
- Appendices including case histories
