Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) - beach management guide
Sandy beaches and dunes are an attractive and important element of our natural
heritage. We use them for recreation, conservation and, of course, as the basis
for Scotland renowned golf links. But most of Scotland's beaches are constantly
changing and eroding. This guide for coastal authorities and managers reviews
the different ways in which erosion can be managed and describes and illustrates
how each technique can be designed to minimise the damage to the natural heritage.
SNH have produced a "Guide to Managing Coastal Erosion in Beach/Dune systems"
(Scottish Natural Heritage 2000).

Guidance: The SNH guidance includes a wide range of information
on methods of restoring sand dunes using conventional methods of dune
protection. However, it also stresses the important of considering "Adaptive
Management ...before deciding on any of the other options set
out in the Guide." This also indicative of a greater acceptance of
a more dynamic
approach to dune conservation, management and restoration.
