Improving the substratum in saline lagoons
There is relatively little that can be done to control the composition of the
substratum in a saline lagoon. However, there are some key points made in the
Saline
Lagoon Guide (Section 3.3.3) which should be taken into account:
- Deposition of sediments in lagoons eventually results in a muddy sand to
mud soft sediment;
- Fine substrata supports more specialist species than other substratum types;
- A diversity of substratum increases the diversity of habitats and thus
fauna and flora present;
- Fjardic lagoons as frequently found in Scotland contain fewer specialist
species, but a wider range of biotopes than elsewhere, including rock associated
communities comprising more marine species.
Caveat: The guide also suggests that experimental addition of sediments
to parts of lagoons could be carried out to observe the possible effects of
this management.
