Maintaining sand dunes in a Semi-stable, State 2
This may be considered to be more or less 'the desired state'. Here
the full range of sand dune types from mobile foredune to grassland, heath and
scrub are most likely to find representation. If the dune manager can prevent
the communities from becoming overgrown and encourage a degree of instability
within the dune then opportunities will exist for the full range of biodiversity
to be present. This situation can span the full spectrum from erosional to fixed
dune but does not exhibit the extremes of States
1 and State
3. The list below highlights the dune management practices which
are the most frequently encountered.

Guidance: Some or all of the management approaches will be appropriate
when seeking to maintain the sand dune system. Recreational
use, long seen as a threat to sand dunes may, by increasing
erosion in overstable dunes help to protect them in some circumstances.
