Restoration methods - creating stability, summary
Restoring sand dune stability is a well tried and tested approach to their
management (see for example Ranwell & Boar
1986; Scottish Natural Heritage Beach
Management Guide; BTCV sand
dune manual). Techniques may involve some or all of the following,
used in various combinations:
| Guidance: Although these techniques are still valuable in some
cases a more dynamic
approach may be appropriate, which accepts instability as part
of the natural dune dynamic. This may be especially important where nature
conservation features have been compromised by a lack of management, usually
associated with a reduction or cessation of grazing
or in extreme cases afforestation.
Under these circumstances a variety of other techniques are required to
restore dune
grassland, dune
heath and dune
slacks. |
