Introduction
to the Guide
What
is the Guide?
The Guide forms an integral part of the 'Living with the Sea' project
(http://www.english-nature.org.uk/livingwiththesea/)
which is a four-year UK based and EU LIFE (http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life/home.htm)
Nature funded. It is specifically designed to provide information to
help deliver coastal habitat restoration, re-creation and creation.
Who is it for?
The Guide is designed to help:
- Agencies (statutory and voluntary) concerned with conservation issues -
where there is a need to restore or recreate important habitats lost, depleted
or degraded by human activities;
- Planners and managers who are responsible for countryside issues - where
'natural' habitats contribute to the enhancement of the general landscape
and enjoyment of the coast and countryside;
- Governmental agencies and departments responsible for the protection of
land from flooding and erosion - particularly where 'natural' habitats are
seen as contributing to coastal protection.
How does it work?
The guide is set out in such a way as to enable the user to decide for themselves
how deeply they wish to delve into the subject. Information can be accessed
either:
- By direct access to each of the main coastal
habitats for which guidance if given. These describe what they
are, how they are managed, what are the restoration options and how can restoration
be achieved;
- Or via a process,
which sets a framework for decision-making.
Information has been collated on the experiences gleaned from practical examples
of habitat restoration around the world. Links to individual sites are provided
throughout the Guide, but can also be accessed via a series of maps.

NOTE: The Coastal Restoration Guide is just
that - A GUIDE. If the information you require is not included, then
a link or reference to further guidance is almost certainly provided.

Comment: This Guide contributes to the ongoing debate on coastal management
at the European Community level. This is particularly important in relation
to the EU ICZM Programme (http://www.europa.eu.int/comm/environment/iczm/home.htm)
and related initiatives such as the EURosion
project.
