The Birds Directive

The Birds Directive is the primary European legislation for the protection of birds. It is enacted under Council Directive 79/409/EEC on the Protection of Wild Birds and was adopted in 1997. Special Protection Areas (SPAs) are designated by Member States which are designed to conserve the 182 birds listed in Annex 1 of the Birds Directive as well as migratory birds.
