Sluices in realignment schemes

Guidance: The use of sluices allows the volume of tidal flooding to be controlled. Particularly suited to sites that are currently too low to support saltmarsh vegetation if opened to a natural flooding regime. An aim of these techniques is to allow sediment on to the site to raise ground levels so that when the embankments eventually fail saltmarsh will be able to develop and the reduced tidal volume will have less of an impact on the estuary.

Comment: Used at some sites in Germany.
