HAP Target 2 - controlling human pressures

HAP Target 2 encompasses the concept of preventing further damage to shingle beaches and structures. It links with Target 1 but is more explicit in its aim to control human activities damaging to coastal vegetated shingle. In this context there are obvious overlaps with habitat management of both vegetation and visitors which has been gleaned from this study.

However, many of the current problems facing coastal vegetated shingle can be attributed to a general lack of understanding of the value and role it plays, not only for nature conservation, but also in coastal defence. Three further key elements have been identified as important in helping to prevent loss and damage to the remaining areas areas of shingle. The first two involve increasing awareness and understanding, by:

  1. increasing on-site awareness and improving recreational management;
  2. producing habitat specific information.
