HAP Target 4 - Habitat restoration

Habitat Action Plan Target 4 is concerned with the restoration of coastal vegetated shingle. Some or all of the approaches to management and restoration given in the route to restoration files will be applicable at many individual sites, The guidance given within each section should be followed. However, there are a number of more general issues surrounding the philosophy of undertaking such work which are considered here. These include:

  1. initiating erosion (moving from State 2 to State 1 in the habitat restoration section). This discussion includes consideration of the reliance on what are effectively static boundaries on maps, which are used to define the limits of designated sites;
  2. the potentially healing role that the 'natural dynamic' can play in restoring coastal vegetated shingle;
  3. dealing with the unpredicable;
  4. recognising that allowing erosion may be an acceptable alternative to creating coastal defences in some cases.

For each of these issues general guidance on action or recommendations for further studies are made.
