How to get there: The site has free, open access throughout. There are
access points by the miners welfare centre, off the
A1068, by the Willow Burn off the A1068, by East
Choppington Farm, off the A196 and from a footpath
that crosses the railway line. Public footpaths
numbers 2, 3, and 79 run through the site. Various
permissive paths also run through the site. The National
Grid has a right to bring vehicles onto the site when
maintaining power cables.
Visitor facilities: Nature trail, public footpaths, permissive bridleway, interpretation boards, picnic area with wheelchair access. Health walks, conservation days, free car parking facilities next to Welfare Centre.

The south west corner of the site is next to Willow Burn Pasture SSSI.
What to see: A wide variety of native woodland birds and migratory species use the woodland and include long-tailed tit, wren, blackbird, blue tit, white throat, yellow hamer and grasshopper warbler. The semi-improved neutral grassland among the young plantation near the miner’s welfare centre supports a wealth of invertebrate including at least 10 butterfly species, several species of spider crab, scorpion flies and a range of moths. Choppington Community Woods is an important site for red squirrel in south east Northumberland with regular reported sightings of red squirrels. Otter are present on this section of the Willow Burn and roe deer are present on the site.
