Local Nature Reserves
Wildspace! a grant scheme for local nature reserves

Family enjoying Holyford Woods LNR, Devon/Paul Glendell, Natural England

Thanks to a Lottery award from the Big Lottery Fund (formerly the New Opportunities Fund), nearly £7 million has been distributed to local authorities, wildlife trusts and charitable groups, particularly in disadvantaged areas that lack access to natural open space, who are involved in the management and development of Local Nature Reserves (LNRs) in England.

Accessible natural open space, such as that provided by LNRs, is important for local biodiversity and for our quality of life and in particular for the sustainable development of rural and built up areas.

Wildspace! is:
enabling local communities to play a leading role in the management and development of LNRs;
improving access for all to LNRs;
helping to realise the potential of LNRs for both formal and informal education;
increasing local community use and appreciation of LNRs;
providing for local communities deprived of access to natural open space;
contributing to local and national plans and polices such as Community Strategies and those for Best Value, Sustainable Development and Biodiversity;
encouraging local authorities to declare more LNRs;
enhancing the biodiversity values of LNRs.

This scheme is now closed to new applications as all funding has been committed.
