The White Peak of Derbyshire gets its name from its geology: grey-white Carboniferous
limestone surfaces throughout Lathkill Dale as cliffs, screes and quarries as well as
being used in drystone walls and buildings. The landscape has been shaped by water,
which has incised the dales through the limestone plateau and formed large underground
cave systems. Minerals such as lead ore and cave sediments dating from glacial times
add further interest to this geologist's heaven.
